DEMOLITION, WRECKING AND RECYCLING TODAY SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION Former Production Plant Site Readied for New Development Era Do you remember AMC’s Pacer, Gremlin or Matador cars? Late last year in Detroit, Renascent began demo-lition of American Motor Company’s (AMC) headquarters, an American icon in its glory days. Originally built in the 1920s across a massive 50-acre property, this facility formerly housed the production of Kelvinator refrigera-tors, military and civilian Jeeps and helicopters. In keeping with its name, Renascent was eager to safely clear the way for a new beginning on this 1.5 million-sq-ft, graffiti-laden, concrete structure and original slab. The project specifications included the asbestos abatement and demolition of the various structures, including a 750,000-sq-ft, four-story structure as well as several residential properties and a tower. With a high-reach excavator, Renascent crews tackled the 125-ft tower on the south side of the property first, meticulously removing the corner-stones, concrete stamps and the copper spire set, which were set aside for a future monument to be erected during development. After Renascent mechanically dropped the final bricks of the building, it turned its focus to slab removal, crushing activities and additional work that included the demolition of a former scrap yard and a city block of residential homes with associated earthmoving. To the north of the immense structure, as abatement was in progress, Renascent sorted through the 20-year accumula-tion of dirt, debris, concrete, boats and cars of what was once an open dumping ground. The scope of work included crushing concrete and placement of One of Renascent’s high-reach excavators bringing down AMC HQ’s 125-ft tower in Detroit. 100,000 cu yds of clean fill, as well as roadway milling to be stockpiled for future site development. Further, 99% of the structural debris was recycled, including concrete, metal and bricks. This complex, high-profile project demanded thorough communication, planning, scheduling and execution with the developer, the City of Detroit, its council, utility companies and the local neighborhood.
